The Chthulucene Manifesto

Master of Architecture thesis. A speculative infrastructural system built around technohumans — hybrid agents that mediate between human and non-human life across the seascape — organized into six interlocking systems: multispecies communication, transportation, inhabitation, consumption, regeneration, and protection.

Balloons, floats, and modular components drift, dock, and redeploy across the water, refusing the fixity of conventional building; mobility becomes the architectural logic, letting the infrastructure migrate in step with the ecosystem's own dynamism. Abiotic and biotic sensors translate between human and non-human registers, giving marine kin legible voice within the infrastructure — reef signals, water chemistry, and animal movement become actionable data, granting non-humans genuine agency in shaping architectural response.

Nested grids across varying scales offer entangled footholds for species of every size: every surface becomes a foundation for another body, human dwelling one scale among many. Resource exchange moves in both directions — humans eat what the seascape produces, the seascape metabolizes what humans return — sustenance becomes a reciprocal circuit binding survival across species.

Growth pods, larval nurseries, and cultivated biomes let technohumans facilitate the regenerative agency of non-human kin; architecture becomes the apparatus through which the reef repairs, reproduces, and returns. Through this entangled, dynamic co-relating — re-producing, co-consuming, and co-inhabiting — components of architecture become the foundation for such multispecies relationships to occupy and unfold, enabled through the linguistic mediation of sensors and technological modes of communication. Infrastructure also shelters against present threats — storms, food insecurity, contaminated water — while housing the coral research for futures yet to arrive. Protection here is temporal as well as physical.
